How much does a typical move cost?

Every move is different, but our local rates are simple. Most local moves get a crew of 3 movers with a fully loaded 26-foot truck, which runs $225 an hour, or $75 per mover per hour. There's a 3-hour minimum Monday through Friday and a 4-hour minimum on Saturdays. We're closed Sundays.

Here's what most local moves run, if you're packed and ready to go. Drive time is already figured into these:

Studio or 1 bedroom: 3 to 4 hours, about $675 to $900
2 bedroom: 4 to 6 hours, about $900 to $1,350
3 bedroom: 6 to 8 hours, about $1,350 to $1,800
4 bedroom: 9 to 11 hours, about $2,025 to $2,475

Do you do free estimates?

We do. For most local moves under 3 bedrooms, we can usually get you a solid number over the phone. If you're moving 3 bedrooms or more, or heading out of state, we'd recommend a walkthrough first, either in person or virtually over video, whichever is easier for you. Bigger moves have more variables, and seeing it is how we give you a real number instead of a guess. Fill out the form on our website and we'll get right back to you.

How is pricing calculated?

Our pricing is all-inclusive. Stairs, gas, and heavy items are built right into our local rate. The only thing extra is packing materials: boxes and the tape we use to secure your furniture. A lot of companies quote low and hit you with surprise fees on moving day. We don't do that. The rate we give you is the real number, and you only pay for the materials we actually use.

Is this a binding or non-binding estimate?

Local moves are almost always non-binding. You only pay for the hours the job actually takes, including drive time, which is already built into our estimate ranges. If you'd rather lock in a binding estimate on a local move, just ask. For interstate moves, estimates are binding unless the contract says otherwise or the job changes.

What forms of payment do you take, and do you need a deposit?

No deposit, ever. For local moves we take cash or check when the job's done. If it's an out-of-state move or we're invoicing a company, payment is due within 30 days. We don't take credit or debit right now.

Question 6

What's included in your moving service?

Accepted Answer

We handle the heavy lifting start to finish. Loading, unloading, wrapping your furniture so it's protected on the truck, and taking furniture apart and putting it back together. We're full service, so we can handle your packing and unpacking too.

Question 7

Do you supply boxes and packing materials?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we can bring boxes, tape, and whatever else you need. Materials aren't built into our moving rate, so we'll go over those costs with you up front, and you only pay for the boxes and tape we actually use.

Do I need to tip the movers?

Tips are always appreciated but never expected. It's completely up to you. If you want a rule of thumb, folks usually do around $10 per mover, per hour.

Do you offer packing and unpacking?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can pack up your whole house and unpack it at the other end, or you can pack yourself and leave the moving to us. Whatever works best for you.

What's the difference between packing and loading?

Accepted Answer

Packing means putting your loose items into boxes. Loading means carrying the furniture and boxes out and stacking them safely on our truck. It's a common mix-up, so we always sort out which one you need up front.

Do you do both local and long-distance moves?

Yes, both. We do local moves around town and anywhere across Nevada. For long distance, we go up to 700 miles outside the state, as long as your move starts or ends here in Nevada. That covers California, Oregon, Washington, southern Idaho, southern Utah, and parts of Arizona.

Do you ever subcontract, or is it always your own crew?

Every single person who handles your move works directly for Carneys. No subcontractors, no brokers, no day laborers. It's our own trained, background-checked crew from the moment we load the truck to the moment we unload at your new place.

Do you move specialty items like pianos, safes, or antiques?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and most of it's no extra charge. Upright and baby grand pianos we move at no extra cost. Grand and concert grand pianos we usually refer out to a specialty piano crew. Safes up to 1,200 pounds are no extra cost, though we can't take large safes up or down stairs. We move antiques too, but we can't warranty anything with curved or specialty glass. Gun safes are no problem, they just need to be completely emptied of firearms and ammo before we move them.

Do you offer storage, short or long term?

We don't have storage on site. If you need to store your things, we'd point you toward a storage unit or one of the mobile storage containers you can have dropped at your place.

Are you licensed and insured?

Accepted Answer

Yes, fully licensed and insured. We're authorized by the Nevada Transportation Authority under CPCN# 3258 and registered with the federal Department of Transportation under USDOT# 3338161. We carry insurance on every move we do, so your things are covered.

What happens if something gets damaged?

Accepted Answer

We treat your belongings like our own, but if an accident happens, you're covered. Every move includes basic protection at no extra cost, which pays 60 cents per pound, per item. Since that goes by weight, it won't always match what a piece is really worth. What isn't covered?

A few things, and we'd rather tell you now than surprise you later:

Particle board, pressed wood, or furniture you assembled yourself
Curved glass
TVs and monitors that aren't in the original box with the original packing
The inner workings of electronics
Boxes you packed yourself
Items that aren't properly padded if they're going into storage or shipping with someone else

Question 18

What can't you move?

Accepted Answer

There are a few things we're not able to take. By law we can't transport flammables like gas, paint, or propane, and we can't take ammunition or prescription drugs. Firearms and high-value items like cash and jewelry need to ride with you rather than on the truck. Pool tables we'll move, but only if they're completely taken apart. Hot tubs are case by case, depending on size, weight, and how we'd get to it.

Can I leave clothes inside the dressers?

As long as the dresser is sturdy and well built and there's nothing breakable in the drawers, clothes can stay right where they are.

How far ahead should I book?

As soon as you know your date. We book up fast in the summer, and during peak season, June through September, we're often booked out two weeks. The sooner you call, the better your odds of getting the exact day you want.

Do you have same-day or last-minute availability?

More often than you'd think. When a closing gets pushed back on someone else, it opens a spot on our schedule. So don't hesitate to call for a last-minute move. If we're free, we're happy to help.

A few things make the day go smoothly. Have your personal packing finished before the crew shows up, clear a wide path to the door, and make sure we've got a spot to park the truck, either in the driveway or the closest street access. Keep your high-value items with you or in your car, things like important papers, firearms, ammunition, and jewelry.
